St Annes men's pair win on 18th for Finals place

GRITTY David Stone and Alan Bailey are proof you should never give up as the St Annes Old Links pairing clinched a coveted spot in the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
Four of the duo’s seven knockout matches on route to next month’s showdown at Slaley Hall were decided on the last hole or in a play-off, with them often having to fight back from being behind.
In their last match they faced a strong challenge from father and son Gary and Garry O’Grady from Huyton & Prescot, but they managed to hold on to win one up on their home course which hosted Final Qualifying for this year’s Open Championship.
‘We never give in,’ said Stone. ‘We’ve behind in most of our matches to be fair. At Blackpool North Shore we were five down after seven holes and won on the 20th.
‘The last game could have gone either way. It was another tight match, fairly played. They were great guys.’
The club-mates are thrilled to be among the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs still in with a chance to be crowned champions in the world’s biggest amateur golf competition.
Stone, off 4, said: ‘This is the first and probably the only time we’ll play foursomes. We’re going to go and enjoy ourselves at the finals and go as far as we can. If we get beat, we get beat and we’ll wish good luck to the people who beat us.’
Stone’s son Adam is a professional golfer, who took up the sport after watching his dad play and he added: ‘Normally out of the family it’s him winning competitions and qualifying. He’s over the moon for us.’
