Kirriemuir pair put 2018 disppointment behind them

KIRRIEMUIR’S Irene Park and Audrey Aiken put the disappointment of their previous near-miss in The Daily Mail Foursomes behind them and have gone one better, charging into the grand finals, writes Cara Sloman.
Last year the Scottish duo just fell short of qualifying for the showpiece when they were knocked out 3&2 at Canmore in the seventh round, but this time they were unstoppable.
They led from the front on their home course, comfortably beating Liz Gardner and Anna Paterson from Fortrose & Rosemarkie 7&5 in pouring rain to ensure they booked one of the prized spots at Slaley Hall next month.
Park said: ‘It was just our day. The weather was the difficult thing in that match. We were very close last year, but we didn’t play well in the final match. This time it’s a different story.’
The last 16 women’s and men’s teams in the world’s largest amateur golf competition now head to Northumberland where they will battle it out to be crowned champion club on the impressive Hunting course at Slaley Hall.
Despite winning three of their seven matches away from home and their sensational victory in the last round the pair are not getting carried away. ‘We definitely did not think we would get there. We thought we’d get put out in the first round after last year,’ admitted Park. ‘Golf is different every day you play it. We’re so excited. We come from a wee town in Angus and we’ll just see what happens. The club are all behind us. We’re lucky.’
