Buckingham men seal first place at 2019 Finals

BUCKINGHAM’S Julian Rowett and Chris Bullin had the honour of being the first men’s pair to reach the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo got off to a flying start at Cotswold Hills winning the first three holes, but with a place in the October Slaley Hall showdown at stake Dave Allison and Stewart Logan fought back.
The visitors clung on though to narrowly beat their rivals one up and a relieved Rowett, who sunk a testing six foot putt to snatch the win, laughed: ‘I ignored Chris’ instructions of where to hit the ball on the last hole and got the putt for a half to save us going down the 19th. We managed to hang on. We played steady golf and used our nine shots wisely.’
Now they are heading to Northumberland where the final 16 men’s and women’s pairs will battle it out for the coveted trophies on the championship Hunting Course, renowned as ‘the Augusta of the North.’
The pair admit they are fairly laid back and Rowett said: ‘The way Chris and I look at it is we don’t say sorry if we hit a bad shot because neither of us mean to. We just walk on and whoever’s turn it is plays the next shot.
‘We don’t tend to warm up either or have a practice round. Generally we’d rather not know what dangers are on the course.’
The last time the club reached the finals was in 2013 and Geoff Robb and Sam Newbould have been telling their clubmates what to expect. Rowett added: ‘We hoped we’d get to the finals. Everyone at the club is saying well done and good luck. We’ve not played Slaley Hall and we’re really looking forward to it.’
