Aberystwyth first timers one round from Finals

JEREMY EDMUNDS and Harvi Singh hope to fly the flag for Wales as they strive to send Aberystwyth to the finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes at their first attempt, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo are still in the hunt after they fought back from being two down after nine to triumph 3&1 at Baron Hill on Anglesey, knocking out Paul Matthews-Jones and Gethin Morgan to snatch a place in the last 32.
It is the first time the pair have entered the world’s biggest amateur golf competition and they have just one knock-out round left to navigate to seal a spot in October’s grand finale at Slaley Hall in Northumberland where the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs will compete for the coveted trophies on the sensational championship Hunting Course.
Edmunds, off six, said: ‘It would mean a lot to get there. It would be a fantastic achievement, but we are not counting our chickens before they hatch.
‘Foursomes can be a testing format. We take it with a pinch of salt. We don’t blame each other. Whatever happens, happens and that’s the way you’ve got to look at it.’
Out to stop them in a Welsh duel will be Rhondda’s Michael Fackrell and Stephen Holley, who impressively disposed of Andrew Vann and Nathan Humphreys from Greenmeadow 6&5 at home in the sixth round.
So Edmunds is expecting a tough tie, despite having the home advantage and said: ‘We were relieved to win the last game. It was a testing course and we needed to produce some good golf. We know this will be another difficult match against single figure golfers. They’ve had a good run as well. We’re looking forward to it.’
