Denton pair find a winning combination

Daily Mail

FORMER Derbyshire county champion Francesca Bougen and Denton club-mate Edith Rooney have found a winning combination in The Daily Mail Foursomes after charging into the last 32, writes Cara Sloman.
The experienced Bougen is a plus two handicapper, while Rooney plays off 27, and together they have notched up some impressive wins so far in the world’s biggest amateur golf tournament.
Their latest triumph was on the testing championship course at Tytherington, where they beat Shirley Naden-Lamb and Fiona Liggett 4&3 and they are now just one match away from clinching a place in the October grand finals at Slaley Hall.
Delighted lady captain Rooney was full of praise for Bougen and said: ‘I have a quite formidable partner. She is so confident. It is probably the nearest I will come to playing with a professional golfer. It’s been a delight to watch.
‘She plays an entirely different game from me, but our partnership certainly seems to work’
Rooney admits she does get nervous and said: ‘There is quite a lot of pressure. I always feel I haven’t got to make any mistakes. I just need to do my best. That’s all I can do.’
She also is pleased to take guidance from Bougen, who was county champion in 2016 and runner-up this year, adding: ‘When we come to line up the putt, Francesca helps me read them and I do exactly what she says on the basis that she is much more experienced than I am.’
Ahead of the crucial knock-out tie against Preston’s Penny Beckett and Jane Young at home, Rooney is getting in as much practice as possible.
She stressed: ‘I’m doing all I can. I just hope for Francesca’s sake we can make Slaley Hall. She would be really thrilled. Right from the beginning she’s been so confident that we’re going to get there. It would be a disappointment if we didn’t. It would be good for the club too.’
