Alnwick Castle pair go 3 rounds better

FATHER and son pair Rod and Joe Henderson are celebrating a record run in The Daily Mail Foursomes after securing Alnwick Castle a spot in the last 32, writes Cara Sloman.
They went out in the fourth round last year, but now the Northumberland duo have just one more knockout match standing between them and a place in this year’s October showdown at Slaley Hall.
While three of their matches have been decided on the last green, in the sixth round of the world’s largest amateur golf tournament they took control to comfortably beat Alan Redhead and Bill Ritchie from Galashiels 3&2 at home.
Rod, 62 said: ‘We just knuckled down. We pegged them back where they had shots and put them under pressure. That’s how we got the result.
‘Joe is a good partner to have. His all round game is very good. He hits the ball an awful long way. It makes second shots quite easy for me.’
Joe, 25, began playing golf when he was four and Rod recalled: ‘He used to play 100 holes a day when he was little. We used to drop him off at dawn and pick him up at dusk.’
Rod does admit the foursomes format can test their family ties and laughed: ‘Joe’s off scratch and I’m off 11. He thinks I should be as good as him and I get a scowl now and then.’
They have both played Slaley Hall, as it is not far from where they live and hope that could give them an advantage if they make it that far. Rod added: ‘Were up for the challenge. We’re looking forward to the next match and we’ll see what happens.’
