Ramsey knock out 2018 Mens' champions

RAMSEY’S Ollie Wright and Craig Thorburn stepped up their game to sensationally knock out champions Cosby for a spot in the last 32 of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The experienced Luke Burrows, off plus one and three handicapper Matt Peyton were hotly tipped to retain their title after chalking up some emphatic wins again this year in the world’s biggest amateur golf competition.
But despite scorching temperatures the Cambridge duo kept their cool and dug deep to beat the seasoned rivals, who were also runners-up in 2015, 3&2.
A thrilled Wright, off four, said: ‘That’s one game we’re not going to forget. It was easily the best golf Craig and I have ever played together. When we won we were five under par. We were on a high afterwards.’
It was nip and tuck for the first nine holes, with the pairs trading birdies to be all square. The pairs were closely matched with Ramsey receiving just one shot.
Eventually the home pair broke away, winning the 12th, 14th and 15th holes before wrapping it up with a birdie at the 16th. During the game the pairs reeled off 13 birdies between them.
It is the first time the Ramsey clubmates have entered the tournament and they are closing in on a place in October’s grand finals at Slaley Hall where the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs will battle it out for the prized trophies.
Wright admits: ‘I’m feeling anxious. After doing all the hard work to reach this stage it would be a shame for it to stop now. I’m confident we’ll give our best in the last game.
‘We’ve looked at pictures of Slaley Hall, so we know what we are in for if we do get there. It looks lovely.’
