Father and Son team book Huyton & Prescot into last 64

FATHER and son pair Gary and Garry O’Grady are making a determined charge in The Daily Mail Foursomes after a resounding win over Wirral Golf Club to book Huyton & Prescot a place in the last 64, writes Cara Sloman.
The family duo stamped their authority on the match from the start, winning the first three holes, before sweeping to a 6&5 victory over Michael Copeland and Derek Wallace, firing three birdies along the way.
It is the second time Garry, 43, has qualified for the tournament with his dad, 65, and he said: ‘We’ve taken the tournament seriously from the start. I enjoy playing with my dad. We’d definitely like to get to the final. This was a convincing win, to be fair, but we’ve come up against a couple of tough opponents.’
Things are hotting up in the world’s largest amateur golf competition with the remaining pairs closing in on a place at the October grand finals held this year at the testing Slaley Hall in Northumberland.
There are two knockout rounds left to navigate before the showdown and Playgolf Colchester are still on course for a possible double celebration after both their men and women sensationally made it through to the sixth round.
The pairs were on sizzling form at home in the fifth round. Steve Ainley and Glen Saunders beat Forrester Park’s Peter Andrews and Roy Sayer 7&6 while Ann Longman and Nicky Withycombe knocked out Sue Gurry and Charley Hatley from Clacton-on-Sea 7&5.
