Downfield men claim Blairgowrie scalp

Daily Mail

DOWNFIELD’S Colin Johnson and Alistair Grant claimed the scalp of former Scottish amateur champion Glenn Campbell and his partner Frank McCarron in a close duel to reach the last 64 of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The pair from Downfield - the Scottish course on which Paul Lawrie qualified for the 1999 Open before lifting the title at Carnoustie - were never down and hung on to knock out the experienced visitors from Blairgowrie 2&1.
It was an impressive performance from Johnson and Grant especially given Campbell’s pedigree. He was a member of the same Walker Cup squad as Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett and although he missed the cut for that 2007 team, he was able to boast of a singles victory over new Masters champion Willett while representing Scotland weeks later in the Home Internationals.
Johnson, off two, sunk the crucial two-foot putt for a par at the 17th to close out the match and said: ‘It needed to go in. Under normal circumstances you wouldn’t be hoping not to miss it, but when it’s for a match you feel the pressure.
‘Glenn’s a well-known name and has been a good player for many years. We’re quite low handicaps too, so it was a pretty close game.’
Downfield clubmates Graham Bell, the Scottish Senior Strokeplay Champion, and Richard Scott have twice made it to the grand finals of the world’s largest golf and to emulate that duo Johnson and Grant need to win another two rounds to make it to this year’s showdown at Slaley Hall in October.
But Campbell is trying not to look that far ahead yet and said: ‘You’ve got to enjoy a challenge to stick at golf. You get plenty of things to test you. We’ll keep our feet on the floor and try to win two more matches before we allow ourselves to get too excited. ’
