Age no barrier for Innerleithen ladies

AGE is proving no barrier for 82-year-old Kim Robertson who has stormed into the final 64 of The Daily Mail Foursomes with her partner Kaye Sutherland, writes Cara Sloman.
Octogenarian Robertson who plays at least three times a week and maintains a handicap of 23 has found a winning formula with Innerleithen clubmate Sutherland in the world’s largest amateur golf competition.
The Scottish pair only needed 12 holes to secure a 7&6 win over Lochend’s Susan Randall and Diane Moncrieff at home.
Sutherland, 71, said: ‘Kim’s an inspiration. She is very competitive. She has found her game again in this tournament. She’s a brilliant putter.
‘If she’s just off the green and she says to you: ‘Just take the pin out,’ you think: ‘Oh oh, she fancies this’ and nine out of ten times she puts it in the hole. She had one of those in the last match. She bats the ball and believes in herself and that’s just it.’
The duo do not waste any time and have racked up some emphatic wins, including an impressive 9&7 triumph at Woll.
But Sutherland admits their success has taken them by surprise. She said: ‘Every time we think this will be it and then we go and do this. We hardly dare look at each other when we’re playing. It has been amazing.’
Sutherland is savouring this run with great grandmother Robertson, who is originally from Borneo, and would love to see them continue their winning streak.
‘We hope to keep this run going. I like having fun playing golf. I enjoy foursomes, as I like anything that is team work,’ added Sutherland.
The last 16 women’s and men’s pairs will head to Slaley Hall in October for the grand finals, where they will compete on the championship Hunting course to be crowned champions.
