FORMER England cricket internationals Janet Tedstone and Linda Burnley are bowled over to have made it through to the last 64 in The Daily Mail Foursomes as they chase a return to the grand finals, writes Cara Sloman. Both Tedstone, who played 12 Test matches and 38 One Day Internationals for England, and Burnley, who was a wicketkeeper for Yorkshire and also played in a One Day International, reached the semi-finals nine years ago for Willow Valley. Once again the duo are closing in on a place in October’s showdown which this year will be hosted by Slaley Hall, but they were pushed all the way in the fifth round at Branshaw by Lindy Jowitt and Shirley Portlock. Burnley revealed they drew on their sporting experience to battle back from being two down after 12 to snatch victory at the second extra hole in a sudden-death decider. She said: ‘Janet thrives under pressure and it brings out the best in both of us. A background in team sport and playing sport to a good level does help you manage those crunch situations. ‘It was a bit of a tussle. It was a game that ebbed and flowed. We were feeling up against it with six to play, as they had shots on two of the remaining holes, but somehow we clawed our way back and managed to pull it off in the end.’ The Willow Valley clubmates need to continue that form through two more rounds if they are to be one of the last 16 women’s and men’s pair competing for the coveted trophies at the grand finale of the world’s largest amateur golf competition. ‘Since 2010 I can’t remember us going further than one or two rounds, so this is really quite exciting now,’ said Burnley. ‘The final was a fabulous event, totally enjoyable. It would be a bit special if we could possibly make it again.’ www.slaleyhallhotel.com/golf/ |
