Pleasington fight back to go through

Daily Mail
25 Jun 2019

PLEASINGTON’S Peter Bedford and Michael Sandell had to dig deep to see off Chorley’s challenge and keep alive their hopes of reaching the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The Lancashire pair were made to work in the fourth round, after Alan Charnock and Stephen Hilton from Chorley birdied the 12th to go four up. But in a reversal of fortunes, the home side rallied to win five of the last six holes to triumph one up.
Bedford, who sunk a tense four-foot downhill-putt to wrap up the match, said: ‘It was a great comeback. We were in a bad place after 12. They hit a par three to about a foot there. We were feeling pretty low at that point.
‘They were getting up and down all the time and just edging us. We like a tough battle. We’re good finishers but not necessarily good starters. We needed to get gritty.’
The duo were business partners for 20 years and Bedford said: ‘We’ve known each other a long time and have been through a lot. Four down isn’t the end of the world for us. We love playing foursomes. It’s a test of golf and a test of friendship.’
It is the first time the friends have qualified for the world’s biggest amateur golf competition and are targeting to be one of the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs who will head to Slaley Hall for the October showdown.
‘It would be brilliant to get there. That’s our aim. We have our local rivals Clitheroe next and I’m sure we’ll have another titanic battle,’ said Bedford.
