Ganton pair hope for Finals return

FORMER FINALISTS Judy Adcock and Julie Brown would love to mark the 15th anniversary of their previous appearance at the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes by sealing a spot for Ganton in this year’s showpiece event in October, writes Cara Sloman.
It is the first time the pair have qualified to represent the North Yorkshire club since reaching the semi-finals of the world’s biggest amateur golf competition in 2004. Adcock said: ‘Let’s hope after all this time, it’s a good omen. Competition is tough at the club to play in this tournament.’
They certainly look on course for more success after knocking out another experienced duo, Judy Butler and Carol Simpson from local rivals Malton & Norton, 4&2, at home to go through to the fifth round.
After getting into their stride on the back nine, Adcock said: ‘That was a good win. They are very tough, competitive opponents. It was quite close, but it was one of those days when we were better. We had shots which was good and unusual for us.
‘I enjoy foursomes. Julie is very competitive and we’re a good combination of handicaps. She tells me where she wants the ball and I can usually put it there and vice versa. It worked really well the other day.’
They have three more rounds to negotiate if they are to reach the grand finale held this year at Slaley Hall in Northumberland.
If they need any extra coaching on the way, they can always turn to Brown’s husband, Gary who is the professional at the club, which has hosted the Ryder Cup, Curtis Cup and Walker Cup. Adcock said: ‘He’s absolutely brilliant. He teaches us all and knows everyone’s game.’
If they do make it back Adcock will find herself making headlines rather than writing them as she and husband Brian are proprietors of the Holderness Gazette, near Hull, where she is also the paper's theatre critic. She added: ‘We are looking forward to the next round. We definitely want to get to Slaley Hall.’
