Family affair for Woodhall Spa vs Stoke Rochford

Daily Mail
11 Jun 2019

IT WAS a family affair when Woodhall Spa’s Terry and Nikita Murdoch knocked out another father and son pairing to book a place in the fifth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The Lincolnshire duo narrowly beat Adrian and Harry Stannard from Stoke Rochford, 2&1, at home on the Bracken Course. Terry, 60, said: ‘It was a super match. It was pretty much neck and neck all the way.
‘There was only ever one hole in it. They just made two little mistakes. Then we were able to capitalise and just held on.’
Nikita, 18, who sunk the winning putt, had his first proper golf lessons when he was seven and his ambition is to get his handicap down to less than four by the end of August, so he can apply to be a PGA coach.
Terry said: ‘Playing in this competition helps with that goal. It’s great to watch him. He lost his mum, Valentina, in January. Anything that can channel his focus away from that I think is good at the moment and this is giving him one of those things. I think it is very positive.
‘Whereas before I probably used to carry Nikita round, he’s now carrying me. Things have certainly changed the last few years. It’s turned full circle. It is great to watch.’
It is the first time the pair have qualified for the world’s largest amateur golf competition. Terry said: ‘It is not easy as there are a lot of good golfers at the club. So far so good. Let’s hope we get a bit further, as that would be nice. We’ll be giving it a go.’
Woodhall Spa have been crowned champions twice in the women’s competition, but never in the men’s. There are three more matches to be played before the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs head to Slaley Hall in October to compete for the prestigious titles.
