Crew and Keenan complete epic fightback

FORMER FINALISTS Tracy Crew and Charlotte Keenan pulled off a remarkable comeback to be one of the first pairs to book a spot in the fifth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo from Reading reached the last 16 of the world’s biggest amateur golf competition in 2012, but looked to be heading out of this year’s tournament after going four down with four to play against Goring & Streatley’s Gill Jenner and Jenny Wickens at home.
Crew, a former Berkshire county captain, admitted ‘We thought we’d blown it. We really did.’
But instead the gutsy pair produced an incredible turn around. They won the next three holes with pars, before Keenan sunk a birdie putt at the last to square the match and force a decider. Then Keenan showed more fighting spirit, rolling in a 25 foot putt for another birdie to wrap up victory at the first extra hole.
Crew joked: ‘We won’t discuss the first 14 holes. Games like this make me concentrate even more, especially as the two girls used to be members at Reading. We knew them really well and of course they knew the course.’
This was also the perfect warm up for Crew who will be competing at the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship at St Enodoc later this month. The four handicapper said: ‘All of a sudden it is: ‘You can play golf Trace, carry on.’’
The pair have been playing together for around ten years and would love to repeat their success and be among the last 16 women’s and men’s teams who will battle it out at Slaley Hall in the October grand finale.
Crew added: ‘We had a wonderful time at the finals. It was a fantastic occasion. I’d love to get back. It would be very special.’
