Nerve wracking 19th win sees Banstead through to fourth round

MANDY HISCOCKS and Maria Ramsey bounced back to win a nerve testing shoot-out to send Banstead Downs into the fourth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The Surrey pair looked in trouble after Horton Park’s Jane Edgar and Justine Leahy birdied the par four 16th to go two up, piling the pressure on the home duo with just two holes left to play.
But then things began to go Hiscocks and Ramsey’s way and in a dramatic turnaround they eventually wrapped the match up at the par five first extra hole.
‘It was all very exciting,’ said nine-handicapper Hiscocks. ‘We played the 19th very steadily and were on for four and two putted, and again Horton missed a difficult putt for the half.
‘I think nerves are always with you. We all go out to do our best but when it gets tight nerves are always there and you just have to try and stay calm.’
It is the first time Hiscocks has played in the world’s biggest amateur golf tournament after winning the club’s qualifying competition and she said: ‘I love foursomes, but it is a real test of golf.
‘I always say nobody goes out to play badly and if you gel and are both on, then great. If one is not quite on then you just have to give each other encouragement.’
There are four more knockout rounds left before the last 16 women’s and men’s pairs will head to Northumberland to compete at the challenging Slaley Hall in October.
