Patched up Peter eyes Finals

Daily Mail
14 May 2019

OAK PARK’S Paul Stephens and Peter Rutland hope it will be third time lucky in their quest to reach the finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, despite their habit of leaving it late to finish off their rivals, writes Cara Sloman.
It is the third time the Hampshire duo have represented the Crondall club in the tournament and this campaign, they have been forced to go all the way to the last green in the opening three rounds before winning each time by the narrowest of margins. The pair have beaten both Army and Alton one up, then more recently North Hants two up.
They also had to overcome another obstacle in the last match, as Rutland was playing with a heavily bandaged wrist, after he sprained it two weeks ago while working on his farm.
“We were both in agreement that we'd rather give the match a go and lose, rather than just concede it and we’re glad we did,’ said Stephens, a 13 handicapper.
They reached the last 32 in 2015 and have now matched their 2017 run by securing a place in the fourth round, helped by two timely birdies at the 16th and 18th to ensured they squeezed out a victory over Pascal Lorimer and Colin Webbe from North Hants at home.
The duo know what is at stake as club mates Ken Meister and Ian Hawker came tantalisingly close to being crowned champions in the world’s largest golf competition three years ago, when they finished runners-up beaten by Pyecombe’s Matt Harper and Andy Barnes two up.
Stephens added: We would love to go one better, but know all too well that there are many good pairings out there that stand in our way.’
This year the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs will battle it out for the first time at the challenging Slaley Hall in October's grand finale.
