Rugby duo inspired by Euro stars

Daily Mail
02 Oct 2018

RUGBY’S Sue Jones and Deb Harrad have described reaching the Grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes as their equivalent of competing at the Ryder Cup, writes Cara Sloman.
Just like Team Europe, the Warwickshire duo are proving to be specialists at the alternative shot format, winning seven knock-out rounds to book a coveted place at this month’s showdown at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
Their latest victory saw them sweep past Ann Nicholls and Karen Trevor from Peterborough Milton with a comfortable 5&4 victory at home helped by a crucial birdie at the 12th.
An excited Harrad, 57 said: ‘This is my best achievement. It feels like we’re real players. It’s like a mini Ryder Cup.’
While Jones, 59, added: ‘We’re really thrilled to get there. We can understand the pressure the professional are under. We’ve been glued to the telly watching the Ryder Cup, hoping to pick up some tips.’
The friends have been playing together for 20 years and were determined to have another go in the world’s largest golf tournament after the disappointment of being knocked out in the fifth round last year in a tense sudden-death decider at Leighton Buzzard.
It is the furthest any pair from the club has gone and Harrad admitted: ‘It was just a relief to get through, as we had so many best wishes from the ladies and the men at the club. It wasn’t just for us, it was for the whole club.’
In the last match everything fell into place for Harrad. She said: ‘Sue is a much better putter than me, but that particular day everything went in. I couldn’t miss. We’ve learnt to battle on when we’re possibly down and out, maybe against better players or bigger hitters.
‘Reaching the final is an achievement and anything else will be a bonus.’
Competition to lift the trophies will be intense when the last 16 men’s and women’s teams tee off on the South Wales championship course on October 15.
