Letchworth hope for Finals glory

Daily Mail

LETCHWORTH’S Daniel Ellis-Banbury and Colin Pearce roared into the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes at their first attempt, writes Cara Sloman.
The Hertfordshire pair scored a crushing 8&6 home victory over Matthew French and Michael Molloy from Langley Park Artisans, to seal their spot in next month’s showpiece held at Marriott St Pierre, in Chepstow.
Remarkably the pair had never teamed up before their club’s qualifying event for this year’s tournament, but Ellis-Banbury, off two, believes they can go all the way in the world’s largest golf competition.
The 26 year old said: ‘This result definitely gives us confidence going to the finals. I think we can win it. We’ve got better every game. We made no mistakes. It’s a good position to be in.’
Although teammate Pearce, 62, who sunk an eight foot putt for a par to close out the match admits: ‘I felt the nerves. I never think it’s over until it’s over. To be beaten after getting this far must be horrendous.’
When the pressure mounts Pearce, off 12, says Ellis-Banbury is the ideal playing partner. He stressed: ‘He’s cool and calm. He’s well used to it. He has a great way of encouraging you. I’m along for the ride, he’s the player.’
Ellis-Banbury disagrees. ‘Colin is very good and steady, he just needs boosting up sometimes,’ he said. ‘I try to calm him down and give him some confidence. He’ll pull the right shots when you need him to. He’s done it so far. I thought we would get here.’
It is ten years since the club last made it through to the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs and Ellis-Banbury said: ‘Hopefully it’s our year. We’re not going for second, were going to win. It would be very good for the club. I’d be ecstatic.’
While Pearce added: ‘This is my biggest golfing achievement. It’s brilliant I can’t wait. All the club is buzzing about it.’
