Katie's Glorious Summer

Daily Mail
04 Sep 2018

KATIE WRIGHT is having an unforgettable summer and will be chasing more success after reaching the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes with her Stranraer team-mate Jackie Hart, writes Cara Sloman.
The Scottish duo were at their unstoppable best at Old Course Ranfurly when they beat Fiona McMillan and Birgit Clark 3&2 to claim their place in the October showpiece which will be held at Marriott St Pierre.
This victory topped off a busy few weeks for the 22 year old from Dumfries and Galloway, as in August she broke the women’s amateur course record at Stranraer, which has stood since 1997 with an impressive score of 67 and was also crowned club champion for the sixth time.
‘It’s just clicked this year. It’s good,’ said the plus one golfer, who has been playing at the club since she was five. ‘I’m looking forward to the finals. I like challenges and playing different courses. This competition means a lot to us.’
Wright works full-time as a life guard and is also a talented curler, a pursuit that has had to take a back seat while she concentrates on chasing her dream of becoming a professional golfer.
‘I love golf. I would love to give it a go. I’ve been more focused on my golf. I felt the course record was coming. I kept calm and kept playing. It is a big achievement,’ she said.
Last year another Scottish club, Duddingston, lifted the coveted women’s trophy in the world’s largest golf tournament competition and the pair will be out to repeat this feat for Stranraer. Wright said: ‘Hopefully we can keep the Scottish flag flying.’
More than 3,000 clubs enter the competition and the last 16 men's and women's teams will battle it out on the famous South Wales course which has hosted the British Masters and the Solheim Cup to lift the coveted trophies.
