Hollidays look to book a trip to the Finals

FATHER and son duo Tony and Matthew Holliday moved a step closer to the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, as they bid to reclaim the trophy for Lancaster, writes Cara Sloman.
The pair bounced back from a slow start to wrap up a 3&1 victory at Dunscar over Ian Bond and John Howard and they are now just one win away from making the October showpiece at Marriott St Pierre in South Wales.
‘If we can get there it would be the highlight of us playing together. It would be amazing,’ said Matthew, 21, who is savouring the winning run in the world’s largest golf competition with Tony, 54.
Four years ago it was Martyn Kippax and Michael Slater who won the coveted men’s trophy for the club and the pair are out to repeat this feat. ‘We’d like to do it again for the club,’ said Matthew and Tony added: ‘Hopefully we’ll get there and bring the trophy back.’
Matthew, off five, began swinging a plastic club in the family garden at four and by the age of ten was accompanying his dad to the driving range.
Tony, an 11 handicapper, said: ‘He’s just a natural, gifted player. It’s great playing with him, win or lose.
‘He hits a long ball and I’m quite good at the short game. He’s a young lad and a bit exuberant. I’m the calm, older person. When you think how many clubs start in this competition and there are 32 left, we must play well together.’
Matthew agreed and said: ‘We’re very confident when we play together because we know each other’s game well. The format definitely tests our patience with each other, but we fight through.
‘We calm each other down. If one of us hits a bad shot we tend to say it doesn’t matter, onwards and upwards.’
It is this approach which has seen them successfully advance through six rounds and could see them go all the way to the top.
