Minto stuns Duddingston

Daily Mail
31 Jul 2018

DEFENDING champions Duddingston joined the exodus of last year’s finalists in The Daily Mail Foursomes after they were knocked out at Minto, losing to Lynn Bruce and Carolyn Oliver who eased into the last 64, writes Cara Sloman.
Dorothy Yeaman and Heather Tumblety had been out to keep their club’s winning run going after taking over from last year’s winners Dee Williams and Karen Ferguson-Snedden, but it was their Scottish rivals who cruised to a 5&4 victory.
This means all of the clubs who reached last year’s grand finals are now out of the largest golf tournament in the world.
Bruce, off 17, who has only had a playing handicap for six years said: ‘After a rather faltering start by both teams, we made use of the extra shots, plus home advantage and ran out victors.’
The home side were five up after the turn, but having been four up in the previous round against Kelso, Minto were not taking anything for granted, as they ended up needing an extra hole to decide the outcome that time.
Bruce praised the skills of Tumblety from Duddingston, saying: ‘She played some exquisite chips shots onto the green on several occasions. She’s obviously gone through junior coaching. She is a joy to watch.’
The pace is hotting up now in the competition, as the pairs only need to win two more matches to secure a place in October’s showpiece event at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
Bruce said: ‘We’re getting by by encouraging one another. I do enjoy it and I’m competitive. We’re looking forward to the next round.’
