Ely City cruise into last 64

ELY CITY stormed into the last 64 of in The Daily Mail Foursomes with on-form Simon Gribble and Richie Murfitt chalking up a series of emphatic victories, writes Cara Sloman.
The composed duo like to get their matches done and dusted early on and their latest home win against Marriott Sprowston Manor’s Tim Hales and Ben Eyre was no different.
They were never in danger after going two up after four. They had back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth, and it was all over when Gribble chipped in for another birdie on the 14th to seal the 5&4 triumph.
‘It was a nice finish,’ admitted Gribble, off five. 'We didn’t really put each other in any trouble. If you can get ahead of people it puts a lot more pressure on them to make shots. We played very steady golf for foursomes.’
Two of the duos five wins have been by a 4&3 margin, while their biggest win was 6&5 when they beat Gog Magog's father and son team Richard and Ross Beecroft at home.
‘Foursomes isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. You can go three or four holes without a putt. It's very easy to lose your touch or rhythm, but Richie and I enjoy the format,' said Gribble, who has been playing foursomes with Murfitt, off seven, for two and a half years.
He added: ‘Richie’s left handed, I’m right, so around our course we know which holes suit each other and we know where to put each other. We’re very calm. A bad shot doesn’t end up with us worrying too much, as we know we are going to get it back.’
Five years ago Patricia Nixon and Elaine Bertram from the Cambridge cathedral city club were runners up and the men would love to make it to the October grand finals where the last 16 men's and women's teams compete at Marriott St Pierre for the coveted trophies.
Gribble said: ‘It’s been a nice run. Hopefully can get through the next two and go to Wales. It would be lovely to get there.’
