Stover pair strike it Rich

RESILIENT Andy Rich and Matt Lyne were pushed all the way at Whitsand Bay in The Daily Mail Foursomes to earn Stover a place in the last 64, writes Cara Sloman.
An eagle at the eighth and a closing birdie blitz kept the Devon pair, who were giving 11 shots, in the tie. They birdied two of the last four holes and recovered from one down with two to play to force extra holes against Trevor Stevens and James Sampson.
The duo were finally able to celebrate when Lyne, off three, sank a five foot putt for par at the 20th to wrap up the win.
‘Going up 19, you certainly know you’re alive. Your heart is beating,’ admitted Rich, also off three. ‘I can only imagine what Matt was going through. He stepped up to the mark. He had his putting head on. It was good golf right to the end.’
They had never played the cliff-top Cornish course before, which added to the challenge and Rich praised his opponents, saying: ‘It was a quite a quirky course and they were very helpful with guiding us around. They were real gentleman and very gracious in defeat.’
The Foursomes format can test some friendships, but not this pair. Rich insisted: ‘What will be will be. We never have a cross word, only words of encouragement. We never get on each other’s back if one of us hits a bad shot. You don’t mean to put each other in trouble.’
They are just two matches away from a place in the October showdown of the world’s largest golf tournament held at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
Rich added: ‘We’re loving it. We’re chuffed to bits to get this far. We’ve had some tough matches. If we can go further that would be brilliant, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed it up to this point.’
