Thomson makes a mark for Kintore

MARK THOMSON has begun warming up for the Scottish Amateur Championship by helping Kintore book a place in the fifth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes after seeing off a hard fought challenge from Murcar Links, writes Cara Sloman
The plus-one golfer, alongside teammate Bryan Smith, off 12, were always ahead. They had a storming start, birdieing the fourth and fifth to go three up, but the home pair stumbled around the turn with Murcar’s John Thomson and Andrew Courage reigniting their challenge by winning the eighth and ninth.
Kintore’s Thomson stopped the visitor’s momentum by sinking a 25-foot birdie putt at the tenth and he and Smith went on to clinch a 2&1 victory. He said: ‘We felt we were in control of the match, but we could never shake them off completely. They played decent golf.’
The Aberdeenshire club need to continue that winning form through three more rounds to reach the grand finals staged at the Marriott St Pierre in October.
Thomson, 33, is also hoping for a positive result at the Scottish Amateur at Blairgowrie when it starts on July 31 and improve on his 2017 finish.
He said: ‘It’s good to play with the cream of the crop in Scotland. It’s always good to test yourself with the best from elsewhere in the country, as well as in this area. I’m looking forward to it and hopefully making some progress.
‘Although I played well last year at Prestwick I made some key mistakes and missed out on qualifying for the latter rounds by a couple of shots. I’m hoping this year for a better performance. I will be putting my entry in over the next couple of weeks’
The Daily Mail Foursomes is playing a part in Thomson’s preparations. The mechanical engineer, who is also targeting a place in the North East District team, said: ‘It is always good to play in a national competition. Any competitive golf helps with focusing the mind. I would like us to keep going. We’ll see who we’re drawn against and take it one round at a time.’
