Woodhall Spa dash Boston's retention hopes

Daily Mail
22 May 2018

WOODHALL SPA dashed world record goalkeeper Paul Bastock’s and Mark McPhail’s hopes of defending the Daily Mail Foursomes’ title for Boston, writes Cara Sloman.
Andy Ditchfield and Sam Restarick beat their county rivals 2&1 at home in the third round and are now aiming to keep the trophy in Lincolnshire and take it back to the home of the England Golf.
Ditchfield said: ‘We’re up for the challenge. It would be nice to get Woodhall Spa’s name on it and add another Lincolnshire club to the list of winners.
‘We knew we were in for a competitive game against Boston. We’ve played a bit hit and miss so far, but it’s got better each round.’
Earlier this month Bastock, 48, hung up his gloves after making a staggering 1,277 competitive club appearances, overtaking England legend Peter Shilton’s record of 1,249 games.
The former Boston United player finished his career by helping Wisbech Town to promotion from the United Counties League Premier Division. He and McPhail had been bidding to keep Boston’s winning streak going in the tournament after taking over from last year’s winners Andrew Dawson and Andrew Green.
And they had the edge after the front nine, with the home duo relieved not to go three down at the 11th when a double bogey was enough to halve the hole.
They continued to claw it back and it was all over on the 17th when Boston chipped out of the bunker only for the ball to hit the flag and bounce eight and half foot away from the pin. They missed the putt for a par, while Woodhall Spa had a chance of seven foot putt for a birdie which they tapped up to the hole for victory.
Ditchfield added: ‘Sam is 23 and I’m 50. He has the youth and hits the ball an absolute mile. Hopefully my contribution is finesse around the greens.’
Boston’s Bastock said: ‘We had a very tight match against two lovely blokes.’
This year’s finals will take place at Marriott St Pierre, which has hosted the Solheim Cup and British Masters, in Chepstow, South Wales.
