Petrie targeting glory

Daily Mail
08 May 2018

GILLIAN PETRIE would love to mark the 25th anniversary of her previous appearance at the grand finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes by making it back to this year’s showpiece event in October, and the Bedale player and teammate Pauline Morris are on course to do that after seeing off Close House for a spot in round four, writes Cara Sloman.
The pair got off to a flying start on their parkland home course, winning the opening three holes. They were five clear after the turn and comfortably beat Ruth Carey and Lynn Patrick 6&4.
Petrie, 56, previously reached the quarter-final with Ballater and since moving to the North Yorkshire club has tried on five occasions to repeat or even better this success with Morris. The closest the pair have come is round five.
‘I’d love to get to there with Pauline. It was a great experience. I’m maybe not as good as I was, but we’ll try. The competition will only get tougher now,’ said Petrie, who plays off five and can boast to have played with royalty. She memorably won a mixed doubles match with the Duke of York, when Prince Andrew visited Ballater during the club’s centenary in 1992.
Another duo who made short work of their third-round match was Frilford Heath’s Kate Evans and Liz Burns. The pair from Oxfordshire needed just 13 holes to secure an impressive 7&5 home win over Lyn Bewley and Kate Surman from Springs Golf Club.
It is the first time the former Irish senior international Evans has teamed up with Burns in the tournament and the pair are enjoying the challenge.
Evans, who is also a former county captain, said: ‘I love playing foursomes. Liz is so excited to play in this event, which is lovely. She is a very good putter which helps. We played very steady in the last round. We didn’t drop many shots.’
They are four matches away from this year’s grand finals, which take place at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow, where the last 16 men's and women's pairs will battle it out to win the prestigious trophies.
