Morecambe overcome stage fright for Finals place

SINGER Ashleigh Wood does not normally suffer from stage fright, but admits it could be different when she tees off in the showpiece finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes with Morecambe clubmate Lynne Perry, writes Cara Sloman.
The Lancashire duo are one of the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs, who will be taking centre stage at the Marriott St Pierre, when they battle it out to lift the prestigious trophies in the world's largest golf competition.
Wood, 25, is used to being in the spotlight. When she is not playing golf, she is singing and has performed alongside famous tenor Russell Watson. She said: ‘I do get nervous for golf. I don’t for singing. With golf I have to take a Paracetamol to calm me down.
‘There will be nerves at the finals, but hopefully we can control them. We’re going to give it our best shot.
‘We would like to win. We know now from the seven rounds we’ve done, it’s anyone’s game. I just don’t want to get knocked out in the first game.'
They sealed their spot at Chepstow after overcoming a shaky start at Heswall to beat Alka Tank and Barbara Jamieson 3&2.
Their next match will be on the Old Course at the South Wales venue, which has hosted the British Masters, the Curtis Cup and the Solheim Cup and an excited Wood said: ‘It’s ace to be playing there. All the seniors at the club have been saying how fantastic the course is and how we’ll love it.’
The ten handicapper took up golf when she was seven and would love to inspire other girls to start playing.
She said: 'There weren’t many girls playing when I was younger which was a shame. I ended up playing with the lads most of the time and that’s how you get your competitive streak from just trying to beat them.
‘I would love to see more girls in the sport. I’m trying my hardest to get them into golf.'
The round of 16 and quarter-finals will be played on October 9 with the semi-finals and finals the following day.
