12 years on - Crondon Park ladies return to Finals

CRONDON PARK’S Nicki Watson and Gail McKemmie have some unfinished business to take care of at the Daily Mail Foursomes finals next month after the stalwarts clinched a place for the second time, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo from Essex found their rhythm over the closing holes, coming from behind to pip Jane Pitcher and May Bird from Fynn Valley two up at home for the coveted spot.
They now head back to Marriott St Pierre for the showpiece event 12 years after their first appearance together in the finals at the Chepstow course. McKemmie, 49, also reached this stage in 2000 when Watson, 54, caddied for her.
On the previous occasions they have been knocked out in the quarter finals, so they are determined to get beyond the last eight this time.
‘It would be fantastic to get past that stage,’ said Watson. ‘Every time Gail has reached the final it has been at St Pierre. There’s obviously something lucky about it.’
Remembering the last time they were there, Watson said: ‘It was a fabulous experience. It’s a lovely course. It will be nice to get the practice round done, so we can remind ourselves of what it is like. It's been a long time.'
The pair, who have been playing together in competitions for 16 years, will be one of 16 men’s and women’s team still in the hunt to win the prestigious trophies.
Watson, who has had to cancel a golf holiday in Norfolk to be at the finals, added: ‘We really enjoy the format. It brings out the best parts of my game. You do start to feel the pressure building up as the rounds go on, but now we feel the pressure is off a little bit.
‘It’s nice that we got there. Now we can enjoy it and be relaxed. The hard work was getting here.’
