Narrow win against Muswell Hill sees Chigwell pair to finals

CHIGWELL’S Maura Folan and Carole Piper produced one of the shock results of The Daily Mail Foursomes, clinching a narrow win at Muswell Hill to beat the experienced sisters Tara Watters and Mandy Miller for a coveted spot in the finals, writes Cara Sloman.
The visitors certainly did their homework by making detailed notes during a practice round at Muswell Hill ahead of the match, and were also aware that Watters, off scratch, is a former England International and twice runner-up in the English Amateur Match Play Championship.
A delighted Folan said: ‘We had a nice little game plan for each hole. We were up against such formidable opposition. Tara was just brilliant to watch and her sister was a very good golfer too, compared to us. The shots helped us.’
Chigwell quickly settled their nerves by winning the first and gradually built up a lead to be three up at the turn.
But Muswell Hill, who had to give a shot a hole, were not giving up. Watters nearly conjured up a hole-in-one at the par three 14th, just falling short, though she still won the hole with a birdie.
They pegged back another at the 17th, but Chigwell held off a final fight back scrapping a half at the last to triumph one up.
Folan, 69, said: ‘It was most satisfying. I wouldn’t want to do this for a living though. My heart was pumping.’
They now head to the Marriott St Pierre next month where they will be one of the last 16 men and women’s clubs battling it out for the prestigious trophies in the world’s largest golf competition.
The club are already celebrating winning the Essex Silver Trophy this summer and Folan said: ‘It would be really, truly special if we could add to that.’
She had her suspicions this could be a lucky year after she fired a hole-in-one during the club’s qualifying competition for the tournament. She said: ‘There were little lucky things that happened along the way. We were determined. It will be practice, practice, practice now. We’ll be ready and will be making the most of it.’
