Titanic fight with 3 extra holes for Douglas Park

Douglas Park’s Ian MacDougall and Martin Bell won a titanic struggle at Duddingston in fading light and torrential rain to earn a place in the finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
There was never more than one hole between the Scottish pairings, who traded blows, halving 16 holes, before the visitors finally wrapped up the match at the third extra hole when they capitalised on a receiving a shot to beat Michael Hymers and Ollie Hughes.
An exhausted MacDougal, 64, who sunk a vital putt at the 18th to keep the game alive and take it into overtime said: ‘That’s one game I will never forget. I can’t think of a closer match I’ve ever had. We were absolutely locked on every hole. The only difference was we were getting one of two shots at that hole and that was enough to tip us over.
‘I don’t know if my nerves can stand much more. I’m pretty much retired. I’m not used to this level of stress any more.’
It is the duo’s first time in the competition and they had never even played the Edinburgh course before, so they did not imagine they would be one of the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs who will battle it out to capture the prestigious trophies at the Marriott St Pierre in October.
MacDougall said 'This has been a big thrill. This is probably my best ever achievement in golf and it is probably the same for everybody who gets there.’
