Welsh derby fight for place at Finals

Daily Mail
22 Aug 2017

CEIRION JONES and Jamie Quinlan are flying the flag for Wales as they strive to send Morlais Castle back to the finals of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The Merthyr Tydfil club last reached the finals in 2006 when they were beaten in the last eight. Now this duo have taken over the mantle and are just one win away from returning after knocking out Rolls of Monmouth’s Ian Stitt and Stuart Davies at home with a par on the first extra hole.
‘We never expected to get to the last 32. It would be fabulous to represent Wales in the final,’ said Jones, whose next match at Coed-y-Mwstwr is all that stands between them and a place in this year’s showpiece event at Marriott St Pierre in October.
The home side have had some tight matches to get this far and the last one was no exception. They bounced back from one down at the turn to be one up after 17, only for Rolls to turn the tables and win the last with a par tying the match.
In the play-off the visitors never gave up, even when their third shot veered far off to the right. All they could do was hit the ball as hard as they could and hope for the best. Incredibly it bounced on the buggy path, before hitting a grass bunker by the side of the green and jumped another 20 feet in the air before coming to a stop six foot from the flag on the par five.
This meant the pressure was back on Morlais Castle. Quinlan chipped from just short of the green to within five foot of the pin to keep the home pair in the game and luckily for them Jones sunk the pressure putt for a par, whereas Rolls missed theirs.
Jones said: ‘Conditions were extremely tough with high winds and driving rain. There were plenty of pars which made the match a very good standard. It was one of those games where it was disappointing that someone had to lose.’
