Last putt nail biter for Weston Turville

Daily Mail
14 Aug 2017

WESTON TURVILLE’S Pauline Waite and Jean Garrett are tantalisingly close to reaching the finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes at their first attempt after a dramatic last-hole, last-putt triumph over Magnolia Park, writes Cara Sloman.
The enthralling battle was eventually decided when Garrett rolled in a pressure putt for a bogey on the 18th green for the home pair to beat Jenny Wynd and Anne Terry one up.
The winning duo, who won the club’s qualifying competition, are stunned by their progress in the largest golf tournament in the world. They are now just one game away from clinching a place in the October showpiece at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
Reaching the seventh round is a record run for the Aylesbury club and a delighted Waite said: ‘We can’t believe it. We’ve had couples enter from the club before, but the furthest they’ve gone is the fourth round. We’re quite celebrities now.
‘The ladies at the club are getting behind us. We’ve had loads of texts saying well done and good luck in the next round.’
This stage of the tournament sees the pace hotting up and this tie had plenty of twists and turns.
The home pair, who have been playing together in club competitions for a few years, got off to a quick lead winning the first two holes, but the visitors fought back to go two up themselves.
By the 15th, the sides were back level and that is how it stayed until the last. Waite admits: ‘It was tight. They were tough opposition. I think the format brings out some of our best golf. You have to concentrate more. This is definitely one of the most fun things we’ve done.'
The 18 handicapper, who works in a special needs school, said they have no plans to change how they approach the next crucial match.
She said: ‘We’re pretty laid back. We’re grateful to have got through the rounds. We’ll treat the it as another game of golf and enjoy it.’
