Three Rivers ladies win 4 hole play off

Daily Mail

SHARON WARRINGTON and Joanna Stentiford won an exhausting four-hole sudden death play-off to send former champions Three Rivers into the sixth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
They both had taken part in their club championships the day before, which meant the duo ended up playing a gruelling 58 holes in 41 hours at their Essex club.
They were two up at the 16th, but Elaine Cochrane and Tina Hollyoake from Manor of Groves fought back with a late charge which included a birdie at the 17th to tie the match.
Three Rivers finally emerged victorious at the par five 22nd after their opponents found a pond and a bunker before conceding.
A relieved Warrington, who plays off 24, said: ‘It’s great when it is close like that. I think it brings out the best in people. It was testing golf. We were shattered by the time we got home, but we loved it.
‘It was unfortunate for them, as it kind of all went wrong for them on the final hole. We were fortunate we played it very steady.
‘They said it was the best match they played and have invited us to their Ladies Open.’
The triumphant pair have not been playing golf long. Warrington joined the club three years ago and Stentiford a year later.
‘This is all new to us. We’re chuffed. I don’t think we’ve appreciated what we’ve achieved so far.
‘We know the capabilities of each other and we bounce off one another. I would say to other ladies if you get the opportunity you don’t know what you can achieve,’ said Warrington.
The pairing who are still in with a chance of emulating the success of Angela Paton and Kay Dalton who won the prestigious trophy for Three Rivers in 2011, are two rounds away from reaching the October finals held at Marriott St Pierre
Warrington said: ‘It’s lovely everyone at the club is really getting behind us.’
