Family's late final charge

Daily Mail

FATHER and son Neil and Charles Hammond are making a determined charge in the Daily Mail Foursomes after an emphatic win over Epsom put Woodcote Park through to the sixth round, writes Cara Sloman.
The family duo made an inauspicious start – they played the wrong ball for the second shot on the first hole – but quickly put that behind them.
Three successive pars propelled them to five up at the turn and then there was no looking back with them beating the visiting pair of Michael Dowdell and Mike Lower 6&5.
Charles, 22, stressed: ‘Getting to the finals is the target now. ‘It seemed unrealistic before, but now there are only two more rounds.
‘Woodcote is a tricky course and the greens are so good at the moment. They’re so quick. They did cause our opponents some problems. They played well for most of the match, but a couple of holes let them down.
‘We were getting a couple of shots and if you are getting pars then they have to make birdie.’
His grandparents, Terry and Grace, along with his father, Neil, 52, who played a lot of competitive golf when he was younger, encouraged him to take up the sport when he was seven.
‘It’s good playing with my dad,’ said Charles, who plays off 15. ‘It’s a lot of stress for him, as he doesn’t want to let me down, but we work well together. We find it easier playing shot by shot.
‘My dad is a good putter. If I put him in a good position on the green he normally holes the putt. It doesn’t matter what we do off the tee we get to the green when we need to get there and finish it off.’
The Surrey club hope these skills mean they are one of the last 16 men’s and women’s teams who reach the October finals held at Marriott St Pierre, where they will battle for the prestigious trophies.
