Kingsdown ladies through to fifth round via the 19th

KINGSDOWN’S Trish Phillips and Pam Stratford won a testing play-off at Upavon to be one of the first clubs to make it through to the fifth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The Wiltshire pair never imagined they could go so far in the largest golf competition in the world. ‘We hadn’t realised we could be such determined old ladies,’ joked Phillips, 68, a retired solicitor whose teammate Stratford, also 68, is a retired teacher.
She added: ‘We were hanging in by the teeth and nails the whole way round. Do your damndest and do what you can. That’s how we play.’
The match against the Upavon pair of Emma Stradling and Louise Woods see-sawed and there was never more than two holes between them. The visitors finally clinched the win at the first extra hole with a double bogey.
Phillips admitted: ‘The golf wasn’t pretty. After 17 holes we were all square. Pam said: “Hit one of your best drives ever.” I hit the worst shot you’ve ever seen in your life.’
But the duo managed to hang on, only to find themselves in trouble at the 19th when their second shot landed in a bunker. Luckily for them their opponents suffered the same fate. ‘When that happened we said: “Come on now we can do this,”’ said Phillips.
It is the first time they have played in the tournament after they qualified by winning their club knock-out competition.
They are clearly savouring their success and Phillips said: ‘We’ve had an absolute ball, as we have got so much further than we ever thought.
‘We say sorry on the first tee to each other and say whatever happens, whatever we say, whatever we do, we don’t mean it. We then have a chuckle about the dim things we’ve done afterwards.'
They are three matches away from a place in the October finals held at the Marriott St Pierre.
Phillips said: Anything now is a bonus. We’ll crack on, grit our teeth and see how far we can go.’
