Comeback kings Ardeer pair win from 4 down

PAUL GIFFNEY and Scott Grant pulled off an incredible comeback to put Scottish club Ardeer through to the fourth round of The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo were four down with four to play and it looked like their run in the world’s largest golf competition was over, but a late birdie assault turned the match around at Largs. They birdied the three last holes to draw level with Allan McNeill and Iain MacKenzie and force a play-off.
The visitors then continued their heroic fight back to win at the second extra hole. Grant put their second shot to within 10 feet for another birdie chance and their opponents conceded.
‘This was a one-off,’ said a stunned Giffney. ‘I’ve never had a comeback like that before. It was a lot of fun.
‘We never hit a bad shot in the last six holes. They were all perfect. It will never happen again.’
Giffney, a primary school teacher, admitted he had not been playing well until the final six holes. He said: ‘Scott kept us in it. He had played a couple of nice shots and saved us on a couple of occasions. I’d had a bit of a mare until then.’
The four handicapper just missed out on a place in last year’s finals at Marriott St Pierre, so his ambition is to get the Ayrshire club there this year. The last 16 men’s and women’s pairs will battle it out at the Chepstow course for the prestigious trophies in October.
Giffney said: ‘I would love to get there, so would Scott. It would be great.
‘Foursomes is a really hard type of game, but because we’re both reasonably good, we egg each other on and keep each other going, even if we make an error. It’s all about never giving up.’
Their last tie is testament to that. They now face Prestwick St Nicholas at home and are hoping for an easier match. Giffney joked: ‘I’ll take a 5&4 to us, that’ll do us fine.’
