Downfield pair hope it's 3rd time lucky

THE SENIORS Amateur runner-up Graham Bell and Downfield partner Richard Scott have unfinished business in The Daily Mail Foursomes, writes Cara Sloman.
The duo reached the finals of the world’s largest golf tournament in 2005 and 2012, but have never taken the trophy back to their Dundee club.
‘I’d definitely like to get there again,’ said Bell, 57. Adding: ‘We’ve never really covered ourselves in glory when we’ve got there, so we’re needing to win it to give ourselves a boost.’
He and Scott, 58, have played together for over 20 years and in the third round they beat Martin Ritchie and Kevin Foran from Scotscraig, 5&4 at home. The pair finished as they started with a birdie and were level par over the 14 holes played.
Bell, a plus two golfer, said: ‘We know each other well, maybe too well. We always like playing in the Daily Mail Foursomes. If you get to the final it is well worth it. We’ve got good memories.’
If they can negotiate another four rounds they might have the edge, as the October finals are back at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow, where they competed five years ago.
Bell, a retired local government officer, had a fantastic 2016. As well as his second in the Seniors Amateur, he was the Scottish Senior Order of Merit winner and a member of the Scottish team who triumphed at the European Senior Team Championship in Slovenia. ‘It was good to be a part of that,’ he said.
Bell holds the amateur record at Downfield, which is the parkland course where Paul Lawrie qualified for the Open in 1999, before going on to win it. Bell therefore has his fingers crossed for some more home ties.
He said: ‘We’ll have to hope for the luck of the draw. If you get an away draw it can be a wee bit more challenging.’
