Matfen pair win through to fourth round

FORMER England international Lisa Ferrie and Nicola Hawes secured Matfen Hall a spot in the fourth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes after beating Alnmouth Village in a closely fought tie, writes Cara Sloman
Scratch golfer Ferrie is married to three times European tour winner Kenneth, who memorably came from seven shots behind to win the European Open at The K Club in Ireland in 2005, and says her husband is keeping a close eye on her progress.
Ferrie said: ‘He’s interested if I’ve had a good day or not, so he’s always curious how I’m getting on.’
It looked like Edna Yeadon and Hilary Buckley from Alnmouth Village, which was established in 1869 making it England’s oldest nine-hole links course, could cause an upset at their Northumberland rivals.
They were two up at the turn, but Matfen Hall had a quick start on the back nine, fighting back to eventually win two up. ‘It was a very tight game and a good solid match,’ said Ferrie.
The winning pair both work at Matfen Hall where Ferrie is the wedding and events co-ordinator and Hawes the assistant golf manager.
Ferrie, a former Northern champion and runner-up at the English Stroke Play Championship, said: ‘It feels like home at the club. It’s good fun playing with Nicola. I’m probably enjoying golf more than I have done for a long time.’
It is the second year the pairing have qualified for the tournament after winning the club’s doubles knockout. Last year they lost in the second round and Ferrie said: ‘It’s a bit of surprise to us that we’re managing to hold on. Hopefully it will continue.’
They will need to negotiate another four rounds if they are to qualify for the finals in October, where the last 16 men’s and women’s pairs will battle it out at Marriott St Pierre to win the prestigious trophies.
