Pyecombe pair under pressure to match 2016 Champions

GARY CAGER and Graham Farmer know they have a lot to live up to in The Daily Mail Foursomes as they go all out to defend the title for Pyecombe, writes Cara Sloman.
The pairing won the club’s qualifying competition and they hope to follow in the footsteps of brother-in-laws, Matt Harper and Andy Barnes, who lifted the trophy last year.
It is a long road to get back to the finals of the world’s largest golf tournament, which boast over 3000 pairings, but the new duo have safely negotiated two rounds and there are high expectations at the club that they can keep the winning run going.
Cager said: ‘Everyone keeps reminding us when we go in the club house. The trophy is sitting in there on the side. It’s a bit of pressure, but it is enjoyable. Seeing it is an incentive.’
Their latest triumph was at Lewes, where they beat Donal McCarthy and Nigel Howe 3&2.
It was nip and tuck over the first seven holes, but the visitors went ahead, winning back-to-back holes at eight and nine to go two up. The match was Pyecombe’s for the taking after Lewes missed a vital putt at the 16th.
While their journey continues the second round saw many other former men’s champions bow out. Beacon Park, Broughty, Fulford Heath, Hazel Grove, Linn Park, Mendip, Muswell Hill and Tenby lost.
At the finals held at Marriott St Pierre, Chepstow in October, the last 16 men's and women's pairs will battle it out to win the prestigious trophies.
Cager said: ‘Matt and Andy said what a fantastic experience that was. They loved it.’
However they missed out on the chance to defend their title, as they were knocked out in the first round of the club’s qualifying competition by father and son, Mark and Drew Bailey, who caddied for them at the finals last October.
