2016 Men's champions - Pyecombe Golf Club

MATT HARPER and Andy Barnes had fallen in the first round in their only other venture into the Daily Mail Foursomes.

But last night the Pyecombe pairing were crowned men’s champions at Marriott St Pierre after withstanding a storming fightback from Oak Park’s Ian Hawker and Ken Meister in the final.

‘This feels much better than three years ago,’ said Matt, 47.

Ian and Ken were still able to celebrate last night - if belatedly - after helping their Crondall club win the Hampshire county sevens title on Sunday.

At one point it looked like they might pull off an unlikely double as, after being five down after 10 holes, they brought it back to one at the last.

But company director Andy and estate agent Matt closed the deal to win 2up.

‘It was painful at the end, but we got there,’ said Andy, 50.

The Oak Park pairing had holed what their opponents described as ‘a mile of putts’, including a 60-footer at the 10th, to win their semi-final 4&2 against the Glamorganshire’s Martin Price and Brian Rigby.

Manor of Groves finally ran out of lives in the semi-finals as they came unstuck 3&1 against the Pyecombe pairing.
