Scothern's finals wait goes on

Martin Scothern has failed in his attempt to make another appearance at finals week of the Daily Mail Foursomes. The former Nottinghamshire amateur champion, who reached the showpiece occasion 18 years ago, was edged out alongside Coxmoor club mate Fraser Darrington at the first extra by Mapperley's Richard Eaton and Alex Piziura in the fifth round.

Two pairings who played in last year's finals are still battling to make it to Marriott St Pierre. Hornsea's Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown, who reached the last 16 in October, beat Cleethorpes' Matthew Barber and Paul Moyle 3&2 in the fifth round. In the women's tournament Anne Main and Lynne Thom of Burntisland Golf House who made it to the quarter-finals last year, beat North Berwick's Sue and Carol Murray in round five at the first extra hole.
