Crook & Oakdale still on for the double

Daily Mail

CROOK and Oakdale both went into the fifth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes still hopeful of winning both the men’s and women’s trophies.

Two weeks later and their chances have been reduced to nothing as both pairings from both clubs went crashing out.

Crook’s men and women’s pairing had not needed even to go as far as the 18th hole to win any of their matches in the first four rounds.

But Peter Shaw and Jonathan Major were edged out 2&1 by Consett & District’s Ian Johnson and Gary Kennedy in the fifth round, while Valerie Davies and Carole Mason were humbled 5&4 to Durham City’s Gail Walton and Helen Loverock.

Oakdale’s Graeme Fountain and Paul Hepworth roared into the fifth round with a 5&4 victory over Branshaw’s James Marshall and Sam Shackleton in round four, but the tables were truly turned when they lost 6&5 to Dinsdale Spa’s Martin Janes and Ian Pattison.

And Oakdale’s women, Lynn Wood and Allison Wormald, fared no better, losing 4&3 to Wilton’s Pearl Crossen and Janet Payne.

Wilton are one of a handful of clubs still able to make both the men’s and women’s finals - which this year will be played at Marriott St Pierre at Chepstow - after their men’s pairing, Mark Newcombe and Kevin Dixon, also triumphed in the fifth round, beating Whitley Bay’s Les Moat and Paul Taylor by two holes.
