Two ladies teams hope to match previous Finals success

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNTY have put their name on the Daily Mail Foursomes’ women’s trophy twice in the last eight years, while the ladies of Dunkeld & Birnam have reached finals week no fewer than three times over the same period.

And now both clubs are making another concerted effort to take the women’s title this year.

Kelly Hanwell and Kirstie Jennings won the trophy for Northamptonshire County in 2008, and they were followed as 2014 champions by Stephanie Goodings and Susanne Barwick.

No club has put their name on the trophy three times, but that is the ambition this year of Rachel Smith and Pam Oliver.

They moved to within three wins of finals week with a 3&2 victory over Whittlebury Park’s Kerry Sumner and Sylvia Smith in the fourth round.

The name of Dunkeld & Birnam has never appeared on the trophy, despite repeated visits to the last 16. Mother and daughter Carol and Gwen Lambie made it to the semi-finals in 2010, two years after again making the last 16, while Jackie Nisbet and Julie Foster made the quarter-finals two years ago.

Anne Walker and Hilary Cunningham are hoping to do even better for the Scottish club this year, and they also moved into the fifth round with a 4&3 victory over Murrayshall’s Jean McEwan and Yvonne McGregor.

All fourth-round winners have just three more matches to negotiate before making finals week, for the last 16 pairings, which this year will be held at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
