Three rounds to extra holes for Middlesborough ladies

MIDDLESBROUGH to Chepstow is one of the longer trips you can make in the British Isles.

But two golfers from the Teesside town are intent, it seems, on adding an extra mile or two on to their journey as they bid to reach the Daily Mail Foursomes’ finals week in the South Wales town.

Competitors have to win through seven rounds of matches to make finals week, which this year will be held at Marriott St Pierre, just across the border with England.

And Linda McHardy and Glenise Cree, from the Middlesbrough club, have needed to go to extra holes to win each of their last three matches.

Their third and fourth-round matches were both settled at the 20th hole as they beat Eaglescliffe’s Pat Waller and Veronica Holloway before triumphing over Tynemouth’s Joyce Teven and Carole Archbold.

Those victories came after a win at the 19th hole over Eileen Chapman and Myrnha Bauchi, from Cleveland, in the second round.

Things were slightly easier in the fourth round for the men and women of Worsley, who both went to extra holes twice in their first three rounds.

Michael Howell and Jonathon May still haven’t managed to close out a match before the 18th hole over the first four rounds. But their two-hole defeat of Denton’s Leon Hewson and Steve Warrender in the fourth round represented their most comfortable victory to date.

As did the 3&2 triumph of their female club counterparts, Miriam Platt and Carol McLellan, over Lytham Green Drive’s Stephanie Chetter and Ann Bain in round four.

Worsley are one of 11 clubs still in with a chance of sending both the men’s and women’s pairings to finals week, the others being Copthorne (Steve May and Mark Logan, and Stefania Argnani and Julie Weddell), Crook (Peter Shaw and Jonathan Major, and Valerie Davies and Carole Mason), Girton (John Creighton and Doug Bottomley, and Jacqui Storey and Ruth Lawton), Grangemouth (David Cunningham and Jason McKinlay, and Janice Bridgeman and Fiona Lawless), Harborne (Paul Cross and Ben Steer, and Rosa Hancock and Hayley Davies), Langholm (Alan Wilson and Scott Laidlow, and Marti Borthwick and Hazel Jeffrey), Oakdale (Graeme Fountain and Paul Hepworth, and Lynn Wood and Allison Wormald), Scotscraig (Kevin Foran and Martin Ritchie, and Ann Burchell and Teresa McGill), Walmersley (Dean Osborne and John Lee, and Susan Appleby and Alison Gedge), and Wilton (Mark Newcombe and Kevin Nixon, and Pearl Crossen and Janet Payne).
