Huntswood fight back from five down

Daily Mail
10 May 2016

KEN MORTON and Nigel Bass pulled off an amazing comeback to win through to the fourth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes.

The Huntswood golfers trailed by five holes with just six to play against Flackwell Heath’s Mark Jones and David Lewzey in the third round. But they turned the tie around to level the match after 18 holes, and they continued their winning streak by closing out victory at the first extra hole.

They still have four more rounds to negotiate if they are to reach finals week, which this year will be held at Marriott St Pierre in October, but they have already fared better than the pairing who triumphed in the foursomes the last time the finals were held at the Chepstow venue three years ago.

Chris Drabble and Dan Housley looked invincible during a 6&5 victory over Allestree Park’s Martin Hague and Dave Marshall in the first round, but they were beaten by the same emphatic scoreline by Chevin’s Alan Cunningham and Tom Bird in the second round.

Ely City’s Elaine Bartram and Patricia Nixon, beaten in the women’s final at Marriott St Pierre three years ago, also went out in this year’s second round, to Fran Johnson and Maggie Ward, of Ryston Park.
