Premier singles players team up for Foursomes competition

Daily Mail
03 May 2016

THREE golfers better equipped for dropping names than shots are at the forefront of this year’s scramble for honours in the Daily Mail Foursomes.

Glenn Campbell was a member of the same Walker Cup squad as Rory McIlroy and Danny Willett, and although he missed the cut for that
2007 team, he was able to boast of a singles victory over new Masters champion Willett while representing Scotland weeks later in the Home Internationals.

The former Scottish Amateur champion, 43, has teamed up with his 75-year-old father and Blairgowrie clubmate, James, in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes and have reached the third round after getting past Downfield in round two.

Michael Disney was a Nottinghamshire junior player alongside Lee Westwood and Mark Foster, finishing runner-up in the county boys’
championship the year before it was won by former world No 1 Westwood.

Now the 42-year-old has joined up with Bulwell Forest clubmate Tim Parker in the foursomes, pulling off a 3&1 victory over Rushcliffe’s Jamie Hennig (correct) and Richard Price in the second round.

Mapperley’s Richard Eaton and Alex Piziura cannot be looking forward to a third-round visit to Bulwell Forest after beating Edwalton’s Thomas Williams and Rob Prosser 3&2 in round two.

Michael improved his own course record at Bulwell Forest by four shots with an exceptional round of 58 less than three years ago.

Julia Gaunt rubbed shoulders with the top players in the women’s game during her time in the professional ranks and as an England international.

Having returned to the amateur game, Julia, who is 50 this year, and Lynn Gray, of Drayton Park in Staffordshire, reached the women’s final at the Daily Mail Foursomes in 2011, losing to Three Rivers’ Angela Paton and Kay Dalton.

Now they have won through two rounds of this year’s tournament, having beaten Moor Hall’s Shirley Coxhill and Eileen Tatton 4&3 in the second round.

This year’s finals will be held at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
