Low Laithes miss out on hat-trick of Finals

MARILYN CHAPMAN and Jill Ware saw their hopes of an incredible hat-trick ended in the second round of the Daily Mail Foursomes.

The golfers from the Low Laithes club in West Yorkshire had reached finals week in each of the last two years, and they had looked more than capable of making it three in a row after a crushing 9&8 victory over City of Wakefield’s Jean Griffiths and Wendy Leeming in the first round.

But Marilyn and Jill, who made the last 16 in each of the last two years, were bundled out in only the second round this time, beaten 3&1 by Howley Hall’s Caroline Riley and Joy Naylor.

However, two other pairings who reached finals week at the Marriott Forest of Arden last October still have the chance of reaching this year’s showpiece at Marriott St Pierre.

Anne Main and Lyn Thom, from Burntisland House in Fife, reached the quarter-finals last year, and they are in this year’s third round after edging out Kinghorn’s Katie Morris and Lynn Petrie by one hole in the second round.

In the men’s draw, East Riding regulars Leigh Gawley and Rees Brown, who also reached the last 16 in October, are going well again this time around. The Hornsea golfers beat Ganstead Park’s Ben Ombler and Sam Hare 2&1 in the second round.

All players must negotiate seven rounds to make finals week, for the last 16 men’s and women’s pairings.
