Former champions on road to return

Daily Mail
19 Apr 2016

THREE former champions are looking to repeat their earlier triumphs in different pairings in this year’s Daily Mail Foursomes.

Moira Wilson won the women’s trophy with Helen Dobson as long ago as 1989. And, while Helen went on to represent Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup before turning professional, Moira has remained a stalwart supporter of the Daily Mail tournament, reaching the quarter-finals as recently as 2012.

Now Moira, who will be 67 on May 1, is back for another go at glory, and she partnered fellow Seacroft golfer Julie Keays to an emphatic first-round victory, the Skegness pairing beating Boston’s Ann Hodgson and Barbara Unwin 7&6.

Mark Hill, of the Great Torrington club in Devon, has also made frequent attempts to repeat his Daily Mail triumph after lifting the men’s trophy in 2008 with Tony Gooch, and he is also through to this year’s second round after he and Steve Baker beat Saunton Artisans Martin and Jamie Pow.

The name of Ian Donaldson followed Mark Hill’s on to the men’s trophy after Ian and Stephen Smith lifted it the following year, 2009. And Ian is also in this year’s second round alongside fellow Beacon Park golfer Steve Sherlock.

Players will have to negotiate seven rounds to reach finals week, which this year will be held at Marriott St Pierre in Chepstow.
