Previous St Pierre finalists on road to return

Daily Mail

CHRIS DRABBLE and Dan Housley walked off with the men’s trophy the last time the finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes were held at Marriott St Pierre in 2013.

Now the Horsley Lodge golfers have taken a first emphatic step on the long road back to the Chepstow course, which will again host the showpiece in October.

The Derby County supporters rammed home their superiority during a 6&5 victory over Allestree Park’s Martin Hague and Dave Marshall in the first round.

There will be no repeat of the 2013 final, however, after Les Waddell and Craig Goodwin, the Moss Valley golfers who also made the last two pairings three years ago, went out in the first round this year.

The pairing from the Clwyd club won no fewer than 10 matches before losing out in the 2013 final, but their hopes of a return to Marriott St Pierre in their Welsh homeland were dashed when Clay’s Graham Davidson Clarke and Lakis Nuthall beat them by two holes in this year’s first round.

Elaine Bertram and Patricia Nixon, of Ely City, also made it all the way to the women’s final in 2013 before missing out on the trophy to Little Hay’s Elaine Meagher and Linda Reeve.

And the Cambridgeshire golfers are looking to return this year after a convincing 5&4 first-round victory at March.

Over 1,500 men’s pairings and over 1,600 women’s will be whittled down over seven rounds to find the last 16 in both tournaments, who will gather at the Chepstow course in October.
